Why Your Car Air Conditioning Smells Musty (and How to Fix It)

You switch on the air conditioning and a damp, musty smell fills the cabin. It’s unpleasant — and it’s also telling you something about the health of your system.

What causes the smell

The cold parts of your air conditioning system, particularly the evaporator behind the dashboard, collect condensation. In a warm, dark and slightly damp environment, bacteria and mould thrive on that moisture and the dust trapped in the system. The smell you notice is the by-product.

A clogged or old cabin filter makes it worse, restricting airflow and holding onto contaminants instead of catching them.

Why it’s worth fixing

Beyond the smell, mould and bacteria in the air you breathe aren’t ideal — especially for anyone with allergies or asthma. A neglected system also tends to lose performance and can hide a developing leak.

• Run the AC regularly, even in winter, to keep the system exercised
• Turn the AC off a few minutes before the end of a drive (with the fan still on) to help dry the evaporator
• Replace your cabin filter at the recommended interval
• Have the system serviced every 2–3 years
